Shires in-hand.

The champion Shire, Martin Fountain's barren mare Woodhouse Calendar Girl, is a big brown homebred daughter of Moorfield Ted. Current Shire Horse of the Year, she qualified unopposed for the 2017 Horse of the Year Show). "She's a good mover with big feet and a lovely shoulder," said Colin Davies, one of the three judges; the other two were Bill Massey and Stephen Flewitt. They took it in turns for two to judge each class, with the third standing in as referee.

Reserve champion was young Philip Moss' black brood mare Hillmoor Angelina, who, like Calendar Girl, has won a phenomenal number of championships.

Earlier this year at the Spring Show, Philip Moss Senior's black two-year-old colt by Martonian Norman, Hillmoor Trump Card, beat Paul Bedford's dark bay or brown colt, Thorpe Hill McCoy, but this time McCoy came out on top. Paul Bedford also won a five-strong gelding class with the bright bay Acle Thomas after Colin Davies and Bill Massey couldn't agree. As referee, Stephen Flewitt changed the provisional order to place Thomas above Ted Harrison's Cumeragh House Dennis.

In the yearling class, Andrew Callwood's Manor Farm Top Slot, a daughter of Manor Farm Top Shot, came before Glenn Dodd's grey Burlington Park Imogen. Edward Whittaker showed the family's bay Moorfield Manor Mac filly, Knutsford Eclipse, to win the two year-old class after Philip Moss' Hillmoor Angelica, a bay daughter of Angelina and Hillmoor Diamond King, was moved to stand second above Paul Bedford's filly Rosemoore Sapphire, by Moores Gay Edward.

Calendar Girl won a class of three barren mares, and Angelina a class of five brood mares. Second to Angelina was Andrew Callwood's Manor Farm Jubilee Girl, whose daughter, Manor Farm Top Shock (also by Top Shot) finished second to Philip and Matthew Woof's Marieth Melody, the daughter of Marieth Maizie, in the class for filly foals. Angelina's son by Leverton King Edward, Hillmoor Armani, finished second to Jack Kitching's Rosemoore Emperor (also by Moores Gay Edward) in the colt foal class. Marieth Melody went on to be champion foal, with Rosemoore Emperor in reserve spot. Angelina and Angelica made a fine sight as winners of the pairs class, because they were in fact a trio, Armani being too young to leave behind.

The current Champion Young Handler, Marcus Callwood, won the Young Handlers' class, his third win in three outings this season. Second placed Jess Evans, who competes with Philip Moss' horses, benefits from the expertise of Philip Junior, who was very successful himself in these classes and judged the final at Wetley Rocks last autumn.

All heavy breeds and vanners.

Four ridden heavy horses came forward. The class went to Reanna Evans' experienced former rescue horse, Higher Red Lees Bob, from John Parr's four-year-old Melyndwr Lady Olwen, ridden by Sarah Warbuton, who broke and schooled her.

This show is one of the few still to include a vanner class for horses not exceeding 16.3 hands and suitable for draught work. Gareth Llewellyn's neat bay mare Ballafayle Dawn, a scaled-down version of the other Shires, beat Anne Baxter's Newlands Cashel, a cobby black gelding with two white legs. The one entry in the tradesman's or farmer's turnout was a coloured cob, the Neary family's Silver Dollars Cash, whom I was told is a wonderful all rounder, being very good at dressage. He pulled a light trade vehicle, beautifully painted and decorated in red and yellow.

I wish all Shires were permitted to have tails...
