Age is no barrier to Welsh Cobs. At the greatest show of Welsh Cobs in the world, top honours went to two 14-year-olds. Clifford Merrick’s homebred
brood mare, Brynithon Cleopatra, has won at the Royal Welsh three times before, and this year her victories culminated in the Prince of Wales Cup. She is by Thorneyside The Jackpot out of Penlangrug Davina, a daughter of Thorneyside The Terminator, and shown by Bradley Merrick. A bright bay with four white feet, she has a filly foal, Brynithon Burmese, sired by Brynithon Kensington.
The other 14-year-old was the Lee family’s champion stallion, Mattrell Legacy, and in the Fronarth Stud Annual Award, these placings were reversed with Mattrell Legacy coming first. A chestnut with four white feet and a blaze, he is by Trevallion Connan out of Danaway Black Velvet by Trevallion Flash Jack.
Other contenders in the line-up were the reserve champion male, Jessie Apicella’s Bookhamlodge Daniel, a seven-year-old stallion by Danaway Tango out of Tireve Super Lady, shown by his owner, and the reserve champion female, John Gray’s homebred Thorneynewside Precious Little Model, a two-year-old by Thorneyside The Kingpin out of Thorneyside Peggysue, shown by Declan Davies. The best foal was Dean Prater’s filly Buckswood Dilys, by Buckles Cherry Tango out of Tireinon Gabriella.
In the Welsh Gelding classes the top Welsh Cob was Kyle Gibbons’ Morry Salute, a buckskin three-year-old by Glynffynnon Pure Gent out of the buckskin mare Kylebeck Karina. However he had to stand reserve to Greta Fuller’s more mature Welsh Mountain Pony, Heniarth Brando, a nine-year-old by Blanche Montana out of Heniarth Norma Jean.
The champion ridden Welsh Trevallion Culhwch Cob was Sonia Smith’s homebred stallion, Trevallion Culhwch, by Gwynfaes Culhwch out of Trevallion Tiger Lily. He was ridden by Katie Parry-Evans. Katie Williams’ gelding Ringside Zorba, a ten-year-old by Trevallion Troy out of Gwernfythan Melody stood reserve.
