Welsh Cobs
at the
Royal Welsh Show.

Llanelwedd.
19th – 21st July 2010.

by Rosemary Cooper

This year a Welsh Cob emerged supreme as the in-hand champion of the show. Cob judge Mr Gwyn Jones of the Fronarth Stud picked Julie Evans’ senior brood mare Haighmoor Glain as his champion before she went on to beat all comers from other breeds. Second in her class last year, Haighmoor Glain also won the The Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship and The Tom & Sprightly Perpetual Cup. A bay foaled on May Day 2002, she was bred by her owner, by Fronarth Victor out of Brinithon Magical Lady. Her filly foal, Haighmoor Seren Wen, is by Trevallion Hooch, grandsire of the reserve champion, Pennal Princess Royal.

Reserve championship went to The Attrell Family’s and Lloyd Family’s Geler Sparc, a bay by Gwenllan Sparc out of Geler Miriam. He was likewise foaled on May Day, in this case in 2001. Champion at the Suffolk show the previous month, he has been very successful over the yearts but his win at this year’s Royal Welsh is his best to date.

By Cob Day the main ring had again become a quagmire, however the organisers promised a new all-weather surface in the main ring for next year. The classes had huge entries, and as ever the stands and the ringside were packed, with tremendous atmosphere generated by the applause for every good mover.
